Course Overview:
The 2017 National Electrical Safety Code will become effective February 1, 2017. With hundreds of changes and additions to the NESC, most of which directly affect distribution systems, learning these changes is imperative for engineering, construction and operations personnel at an electric utility. This seminar focuses on the application of the 2017 National Electrical Safety Code, with particular emphasis on the changes to the existing rules and new rules that have been added. The class is geared toward engineering, operations, and construction perspectives.
The course will include discussions on application requirements, defining the point of service, system grounding requirements, and grounding techniques. Overhead line clearances to buildings, roads, signs, grain bins, pools, water, and other power/communication lines will be thoroughly covered. Clearances on the structure between phase conductors, neutral wires, and communication cables will be addressed to provide a clear understanding of the supply and communication spaces on the poles. Code requirements for underground cables and work rules will also be covered.
Attendees will learn the meaning of the safety code rules as well as how to apply the rules in everyday situations. Numerous examples, photos, and drawings of problematic situations and NESC-based solutions to those situations will be provided for discussion. The class environment will promote participant interaction and discussions, including sharing of experiences and challenges participants have confronted when applying the NESC rules.

This course will cover the following:
