Who Should Attend:
Engineers and senior technical personnel involved in distribution system design, planning, modeling, and analysis.
Related Events:
Distribution Engineering Series: Overcurrent Protection, July 15-16, 2025
Overview:
The focal point of this weeklong class will be modeling the system and interpreting the results. This module will cover theory used to model distribution systems, including system impedance models, connectivity, loading the model, calculation of voltage drops, and load currents. You will learn how to set planning criteria and, most importantly, how to project and grow a sample system model and solve common system problems such as low voltage and/or excessive load current. Together, the class will discuss methods of how to place fixed and switched capacitor banks and work through class problems.
Another focus will be on the development of short- and long-range plans for distribution systems and thoroughly review how to prepare a present worth analysis. You will also learn methods for factoring reliability in the planning process as well as methods to determine discount rates, carrying charges, and interest rates. Discussion will also include estimating construction options, including budgeting for new service extensions.
Note: This course is part of the Distribution Engineering Series. Sessions in this series may be taken in any order.
