Course Overview:

Enterprise risk management (ERM) is the discipline of examining the impact of potential financial, operational, regulatory, environmental, legal, safety, and reputation risks on an organization. Sound enterprise risk management practices help utilities improve their operational and organizational effectiveness. Enterprise risk information can inform strategy, tactics, compliance, audit, financing, and operational processes.

This one-day course will provide several approaches to gather and use enterprise risk management information at the utility. The instructor will review the different steps to inventory enterprise risks, rank risks, mitigate risks, and report risks. Additionally, the instructor will discuss how some utilities have developed their approach to use enterprise risk information within the utility. There will be time in the schedule for participants to plan a customized approach for their utility.

This program is for utilities that are considering how to develop ERM practices and for utilities that have taken initial steps to start an ERM approach. Participants from organizations where no formal ERM processes exist today will get help from the instructor on how to get started. And, participants from organizations where some preliminary ERM work has been completed, will get assistance from the instructor with "next steps."

Course Objectives:

  • Identify the primary areas of enterprise risk within utilities
  • Discuss who should participate in enterprise risk management work
  • Review several approaches to identify risks, rank risks, and develop risk mitigation strategies
  • Participate in a risk inventory and risk ranking exercise with other participants
  • Consider the range of risk mitigation strategies that utilities use for different areas of risk
  • Develop a plan to identify, rank, and report risks (and mitigation efforts) at your organization
  • Discuss different ways that enterprise risk information can be integrated into other planning practices
  • Learn how to develop a sustainable enterprise risk management approach at your utility
  • Receive a booklet of prior NWPPA-published ERM articles for future reference
