Who Should Attend:

Those involved in any aspect of administering or supporting the collective bargaining agreement and/or supporting the labor relations function within their organization including human resources, labor/employee relations, all levels of management (line, senior, assistant GM, GM/CEO and elected officials) and any others who would like to sharpen their negotiation skills and become more familiar with the details of the process.

Course Overview:

This is a comprehensive foundational course designed to guide participants through the basics of any negotiation experience but with an emphasis on labor negotiations with a union. More than just information on how and what to do, this course focuses equally on what not to do. The class will include interactive activities to build and improve participants’ skill sets so they can continue to hone them well after the course has ended.

Course Objectives:

  • Defining negotiation.
  • Negotiations philosophy/approach/styles.
  • Behavioral and physical preparedness.
  • Lawful obligations of negotiating the CBA.
  • Relationship/ethical obligations of negotiating the CBA.
  • Information/data-mining resources.
  • Evaluating potential influences.
  • Selecting and training your team(s) (it’s a team sport).
  • Ending the “end run”.
  • Maintaining the record.
  • Developing substantive, monetary and housekeeping proposals.
  • Management and union rights.
  • Vetting and prioritizing management and union proposals.
  • Communications (before, during, and after).
  • Costing models.
  • Ground rules.
  • The three elements of every negotiation.

Course Schedule:

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on the first day; the class will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on days one and two, and from 8:30 a.m. to noon on day three. Lunch will be provided on days one and two; morning and afternoon breaks will be provided every day.

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations are accepted, with full refund, if request is made at least 30 days prior to the course. Within 30 days, fees are as follows: 15-29 days, $100; 1-14 days or "no show," 100 percent of registration fee. When possible, please send a substitute instead of canceling. NWPPA does not charge a fee for substitutions.

Continuing Hours:

This course qualifies for 15 continuing hours. Certificates are issued upon full completion of the course.
