Northwest Communications & Energy Innovations Conference, September 16-18, 2019

Course Overview:

Bring both your sense of adventure and humor to an afternoon with communications expert and political consultant, Chris Ulrich. Be prepared for a high-energy, two-part workshop as he gives up his secrets about the power of body language and lessons in using improvisation to increase confidence, presence, and teamwork. Ulrich was the keynote speaker at last year's NIC and we needed more!

Course Outline

Part 1: You say more than you think!

Uncovering the mysteries of body language—how people communicate their thoughts and feelings without saying a word—is a powerful first step toward mastering any professional and social situation. All successful people know that the ability to detect and react to the split-second signals that skim across peoples' bodies hundreds of times each day is crucial to getting what they want in life.

In this part of the workshop you will learn to:

  • Tune up your power gestures
  • Spot discomfort and deviations in hidden facial expressions – and act accordingly
  • Properly sit in a meeting (whether formal or informal) to help your chances of being perceived as a leader
  • Spot the business stances that convey power, authority, nervousness, passivity, and respect, and get the team moving in the same direction
  • Use appropriate hand gestures and solid body stances while avoiding emotionally charged facial micro-expressions
  • Decrease tension and increase the level of respect people have for you

Part 2: Using improvisation to transform the way you work and work with others

Like life itself, work does not follow a ready-made script. You have to think and adapt as you go. In a word: improvise. The best, most dynamic leaders do this as a matter of course. They use improvisation skills—often the same ones used by actors and comics—to be powerful communicators, selfless listeners, acute observers, and agile promoters of teamwork and collaboration.

In this part of the workshop, you will learn tested improvisation techniques; engage in dynamic and structured improv games; and experience the thrill of breaking through self-imposed limitations. This play-focused session will transcend our reliance on knowledge and experience by getting you comfortable thriving in the uncertainty of the moment and adjusting their perception of yourself and others.

In this part of the workshop you will learn to:

  • Enhance creativity, gain clarity, and increase self-confidence
  • Understand the concept of “Yes and” and use it to foster collaboration, teamwork, and reduced negativity
  • Finely tune engaged listening skills to create more dynamic interactions
  • Develop greater mental agility and flexibility
  • Create open and powerful communication with colleagues
