Who Should Attend:

Employees involved in any aspect of preparing and/or processing work orders for their electric utility, or employees outside the accounting area who want a better understanding of the work order process.

Course Overview:

Public utilities’ biggest investments are the electric infrastructure assets, including poles, wires, and transformers needed to deliver electricity. It’s a complex process to take raw materials, labor, and overheads and convert them to your organization’s largest asset. This two-day course will provide an overall understanding of the work order system, how to pay for the investment, and an exploration of numerous components within the work order system.

Course Objectives:

Day One:

• Learn about the history of the Rural Utility Service loan program requirements and procedures. This will provide a baseline understanding of how and why we have done things the way we have in our work order processes. By understanding what is required for RUS to approve loan funds for plant, we can better understand the work order process.
• Gain understanding of classifications and 740c codes, including new construction, system replacements, and retirement of plant. What is a work order, unit, assembly, and CPR? Understand when to capitalize costs or expense them. What’s so special about special equipment? What about depreciation? What is the impact of using contract labor versus in-house labor?
• Experience and interact with the overall work order process and micro-processes within it.

Day Two:

• Not only is the work order accounting system complex, it’s expensive. How are we going to pay for this infrastructure investment? What about repairs and maintenance? And storms? Or Federal Emergency Management Agency payments from a declared disaster? How about contributions in aid of construction? How do rates recover all these costs?
• When do work orders need to be set up? What do you need to know about a staking sheet? Other topics will include inventory, overhead allocations and factors, closing of work orders, stores expenses, standard costs, and internal controls.
• Apply an understanding of workshop concepts by participating in exercises that challenge the idea of "that’s the way we’ve always done it.”

Together, we will step through this intricate process to understand the components, as well as understand how it shows up on the monthly billing statement to the consumer!

Course Schedule:

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on the first day, and the class will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days. Lunch, as well as morning and afternoon breaks, will be provided.

Cancellations are accepted, with full refund, if request is made at least 30 days prior to the course. Within 30 days, fees are as follows: 15-29 days, $100; 1-14 days or "no show," 100 percent of registration fee. When possible, please send a substitute instead of canceling. NWPPA does not charge a fee for substitutions.

Continuing Hours:

This course qualifies for 12 continuing hours. Certificates are issued upon full completion of the course.
