Credit and Collections Issues Workshop

Date(s):
March 31, 2026
Venue:
Northwest Public Power Association
Description:

Who Should Attend:

Customer and member service representatives and anyone who wants to understand the latest credit and collections best practices.

Overview:

Rising costs continue to create financial stress for many individuals and families. For utility members and ratepayers, paying their electric bill is not always the top priority. As stewards of ratepayer care and utility financial health, utilities must continuously evolve their credit and collections strategies to meet current realities with fairness, consistency, and flexibility.

This year’s workshop offers a practical, working session where credit, collections, and member service professionals can collaborate, challenge assumptions, and develop new tools for managing accounts receivable.

Alignment activity: During the workshop, you will complete a guided exercise comparing your utility’s credit and collections policies with regulated public service commission/public utility commission requirement. This activity will include a look at notification timelines, disconnection and reconnection procedures, deposit requirement and exemptions, and payment plan standards.

Topics:

  • Deposit policies and reconnection fees: What’s fair, legal, and reasonable in 2026?
  • Prepay programs: Are they gaining traction, and do they support or hinder member engagement?
  • Distributed energy (solar) and demand billing: How do new technologies and rate structures affect collections and member understanding?
  • Dealing with angry or frustrated customers: Practical de-escalation techniques, empathy tools, and knowing when to escalate internally.
