Course Overview:

Enterprise risk management (ERM) is the discipline of examining the impact of potential financial, operational, regulatory, environmental, legal, safety, and reputation risks on an organization. Implementing ERM helps utilities achieve their objectives by improving their operation and organizational effectiveness. A strong ERM program will integrate risk management with strategy, tactics, and operational processes.

Course Objectives:

On day 1 of this class, the instructor will help participants plan how to implement ERM at their organizations or increase the effectiveness of existing ERM programs within their organizations. The session will include recommended steps for launching and maintaining an ERM program internally within the organization. Day 1 will focus on the application of ERM within the utility.

Day 1 course objectives include:

  • Review principles of risk appetite and risk tolerance
  • Review a rating agency perspective of ERM
  • uss the COSO enterprise risk management framework and ISO 31000 model
  • Explore critical differences between operational risks and strategic risks, as well as known and unknown risks
  • Review different types of utility enterprise risks
  • Develop a top-10 risk inventory for your utility
  • Discuss how to implement an ERM program including practical tips and critical success factors
  • Consider the scope, scale, and resources required for different types of ERM programs
  • Discuss how to gather information about risk exposures
  • Participate in a mock risk inventory and ranking exercise

 

During day 2, participants will learn about various tools and methods to report and measure risks. The instructor will share practical decision-making tools and techniques with participants, demonstrating how energy professionals can apply risk analysis and mitigation planning to significant organizational initiatives.

 

Day 2 objectives include:

  • Consider various responses to risk and what types of mitigation strategies can be applied to any given risk
  • Review how to apply probability theory and expected value to risk analysis
  • Use new tools and methods to measure and depict risks; to weigh opportunity and risk; and to rank risks from the perspective of probability and severity
  • Use risk-based decision-making techniques to manage projects and strategic initiatives
  • Incorporate ERM tools into project planning and strategic planning
  • Discuss links between strategy and ERM, focusing on how strategic planning can incorporate risk analysis and scenario planning
  • Work on a case study of a utility that implemented ERM and is in the midst of changing its strategy
  • Consider how a black-swan event or perfect storm can impact your utility
