Depreciation Workshop

Date(s):
September 23, 2025
Venue:
The Centennial Hotel
Description:

Who Should Attend:

All accounting and finance staff, CFOs, managers, engineers, operations staff, and senior-level leaders.

Overview:

In this one-day workshop, you will gain a solid understanding of how infrastructure is paid for over time and the impact of decisions relating to depreciation and rate making. This course includes interactive activities to increase knowledge and understanding of the depreciation concepts unique to utilities.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and understand the key factors of depreciation: cost, salvage value, useful life, and obsolescence.
  • Gain perspective on how a utility is similar and unique to other industries. Understand why it is important to apply these core concepts to the specific situation of your utility.
  • Explore the Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 144: Accounting for the Impairment or Disposal of Long-Lived Assets.
  • Correlate the IRS Publication 946, How to Depreciate Property, to an electric utility.
  • Identify and build a plan to prepare for annual audit procedures, including exploring how an auditor analyzes annual and accumulated depreciation of a utility.
  • Calculate the average useful life of assets listed on your balance sheet, as well as estimate impacts of adjusting depreciation methods and useful life, comparing and contrasting big-picture and detailed analysis.

What to Bring:

Bring as many of the following items as possible:

  •  Most recent Form 7, or balance sheet and operating statement.
