Staking Technician Certification Program - Phase 1

Staking technicians and engineers.
Course Overview:
Phase 1 of the NWPPA Staking Certificate Program will cover basic surveying; overhead/pole-line structure design and layout; joint-use staking and make-ready surveys; and unique structures. The successful passing of online examinations is required to receive certification for the Three-Phase Staking Program. Phases 1, 2, and 3 do not need to be taken in order.
Course Topics:
Basic Surveying:
Make accurate distance measurements
Turn and dissect line angles
Measure changes in elevation
Conduct a complete point survey using a total station
Understand a basic overview of GPS and its application
Overhead/Pole-Line Structure Design and Layout:
Design overhead electrical distribution structures
Review conductors, poles, pole-top assemblies, guys, and anchors
Learn basic calculations to determine maximum allowable spans; wind and ice loading; and total guy load
Joint-Use Staking and Make-Ready Surveys
Review clearance measurements
Learn about strength requirements
Practice construction estimates
Discuss final inspections
Understand the requirements of joint-use contracts
Unique Structures
Design special structures that require additional strength due to extreme wind load, long spans, and multiple circuits
Design steel pole and unguided, wood pole structures

Course Schedule:
Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. Alaska Time on day one; the class will run from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on day one; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on day two through day four, and will run from 8:30 a.m to noon. Lunch will be provided on day two through day four. Refreshments will be provided on all days.

Note: Organizations that register a group of employees will receive every fifth registration for free. For example, if you register five employees, you only pay for four; register 10 employees, you only pay for eight; and so on. There is nothing additional you need to do to receive this discount.
Cancellation Policies:
For webinars, virtual classes, and section meetings: cancellation at least five days prior to the event, full refund; within 1-4 days or no show, 100% of the registration fee.
For in-person events: cancellation at least 30 days prior to the event, full refund; within 15-29 days, $100 fee; and within 1-14 days or no show, 100% of the registration fee.
If canceling because the attendee is showing COVID-19 symptoms any time before the event, a full refund will be issued; if leaving during the event for COVID-19 reasons, a prorated refund will be issued.
When possible, please send a substitute instead of canceling; NWPPA does not charge a fee for substitutions. To request a refund, please contact us, via email, registration@nwppa.org, or call 360-816-1457.

Continuing Hours:
This course qualifies for 24 continuing hours. Certificates are issued upon full completion of the course.
