Hands-on Basic Records Management

Who Should Attend:
Administrative assistants, executive assistants, records coordinators, records managers, and any utility staff working with documents and records, both paper and electronic.
Course Overview:
During this 1.5-day, highly interactive workshop, participants will roll up their sleeves to gain a clear understanding of basic records management; learn the why and how of developing a records program within your utility; understand the need for consistent practices and the importance of internal policies; understand the records inventory and file plan; discuss the pros and cons of centralizing or decentralizing your records program; and more. Participants will have an opportunity to learn what others are doing in their utility.
On day two, the group will meet for a half-day roundtable to debrief from the first day of class, discuss insights learned, and discuss the possibility of forming an NWPPA-sponsored records group for any member state that is interested. Break-outs will be scheduled for members to discuss what their respective records group might look like and how often it might meet throughout the year.
Course Objectives:
- Learn the 10-step overview of developing a records management program
- Learn the development process of records management policies
- Gain a basic understanding of records series and the application of functional analysis and classification
- Gain a basic understanding of legislation and regulations affecting records management
- Learn the basics of records appraisal and retention application
- Learn the basics of agency-wide training and staff responsibilities
- Receive an overview of available resources and current technology trends

Course Schedule:
Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on the first day; the class will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on day one, and from 8 a.m. to noon on day two. Lunch will be provided on the first day. Morning and afternoon breaks will be provided both days.
