Who Should Attend:

First responders who are likely to witness or discover a hazardous substance release and those individuals who respond to releases for the purpose of protecting nearby persons, property, or the environment from the effects of the release.

Webinar Overview:

Refresh your knowledge and understanding of the requirements for hazardous waste operations and emergency response (HAZWOPER), as required by 29 CFR 1910.120. This course also helps to satisfy the annual HAZWOPER training required for re-certification. This course is designed to train operations-level responders to take defensive actions to a hazardous materials spill. The content focuses on activities such as hazard assessment; selecting and using protective equipment; implementing the facility emergency response plan; and setting up decontamination. It does not focus on intending to stop the release. Highlights include applicable regulations; hazard assessment and general hazards; physical properties of hazardous chemicals used in utilities; toxicology; PPE selection and use; facility emergency response plans; site control and entry; construction safety and confined space; decontamination; and hands-on training. (Must be renewed annually.)

Note: Additional training may be required (24-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER) depending upon the requirements of your position.

The class will be broken into three modules totaling the required eight hours. You must attend all three sessions to get credit for the class. This class satisfies the OSHA requirement for first responder operations level as well as annual 8-hour refresher training per 29 CFR1910.120(q) or 29 CFR 1926.65 (q) for 8, 24, or 40-hour trained employees.

Topics will include a review of the OSHA standard and requirements.

Webinar Agenda:

Session One (September 9, 2020)

• Review of the HAZWOPER regulation, the triggers that require conformance to the regulation, levels of training
• Some vocabulary building
• A brief update on environmental regulations and current rulemaking, including PCBs, waterways, and other OSHA and EPA initiatives
• We will review why we perceive things the way we do and have an initial spill scenario to work through

Session Two (September 10, 2020)

• Discuss and review last week’s session
• Continue the discussion of perception vs. accurate perception
• Hazard analysis techniques and control measures
• Smart phone applications and other new technology
• How GHS, DOT HazMat, and infectious substances tie in to HAZWOPER
• Selection of chemical protective clothing
• Other personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection
• Donning and doffing PPE
• Another spill response scenario or two

Session Three (September 16, 2020)

• Review thoughts from last week
• Discuss the pandemic and how it has affected people’s perception of PPE as well as challenges that it has caused
• Fire protection approaches
• Spill control methods
• Federal and state reporting requirements

The first two webinars will be held on September 9 and 10 from 1-4 p.m. Pacific Time, and the third webinar will be held on September 16 from 1-3 p.m. Pacific Time. Attendees will be admitted 15 minutes before the webinar begins. The course is only available live; no recording will be made available.

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations are accepted, with full refund, if request is made at least 30 days prior to the course. Within 30 days, fees are as follows: 15-29 days, $100; 1-14 days or no show, 100% of registration fee. When possible, please send a substitute instead of canceling; NWPPA does not charge a fee for substitutions.

Continuing Hours:

This course qualifies for six continuing hours. Certificates are issued upon full completion of the course.
