Flipping the Switch: A Public Power Boot Camp

Date(s):
September 23 — 26, 2024
Venue:
Kootenai Electric Cooperative, Inc.
Description:

Who Should Attend:

All employees (utility or vendor) who are new to the industry or anyone who would benefit from a basic understanding of public power.

Course Overview:

Are you new to public power? Or maybe you work in human resources and are looking for a terrific onboarding class for your newer employees. Or maybe you’ve been at your job for a while but feel like you have much more to learn—and you probably do because public power has such a rich history with so many parts and pieces continuously evolving within it. That is why we have taken two of our most popular classes, Electric Utility Business Fundamentals and Electric Utility System Operations, and combined them into a four-day training extravaganza—or, as we like to call it, boot camp!

Julie Ryan will lead you through the first two days by discussing the terminology, functions, and processes of the public power industry. Some of the topics covered will include balancing load, resources, and wholesale power markets; the alphabet soup of federal and state regulators; and the utility workforce in transition.

During the next two days you will dive into the technical side of the industry with longtime NWPPA instructor Skip Collier. This section will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of electric utility system operations, including generation, transmission, and distribution. You will also learn how the key pieces of equipment in the system are built, how the equipment operates, and how the equipment functions in the overall operations of a utility system.

NWPPA is grateful for Kootenai Electric Cooperative for extending the use of their new facility, the Jake Booth Memorial Training Center, which will allow attendees to safely examine transformers, switches, reclosers, hot sticks, and more.
